NGN Numbers

COPPER TELEPHONE LINES WILL FADE OUT SOON

Telephone lines which have been at the heart of UK's telephony for decades will soon change forever. Openreach- British Telecommunications' infrastructure division will retire old copper lines in December 2025.

This behind the scene development will have a real impact on every household and business. The switch off will essentially affect two different copper-based telephone systems namely PSTN and ISDN.

Their replacement will be the fibre-optic based internet telephony popularly called VoIP/SIP.

Since both PSTN and ISDN run through the old copper telephone network, both services will cease when these copper lines are switched off.

ISDN Lines

ISDN denotes Integrated Services Digital Network. It is a circuit-switched telephone network system, which also provides access to packet switched networks, designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in potentially better voice quality than an analogue phone can provide.

ISDN2e

ISDN30e

ISDN30e is for large businesses that operate call centres, require consistency for transfer of large data files and high -quality video conferencing. Businesses with two or more sites can also get them linked as ISDN30e supports WAN. It can be connected to any type of switch.

THE END OF ISDN IN 2025: THE WAY FORWARD

BT has announced the end of sales to new customers of ISDN service in 2020 and the end of life for their ISDN network in 2025 hence such would have to be migrated before there is no more service.

Indeed, five years appears to be a long time in business but there are immediate factors to consider which will make you act as fast as you can.

The topmost factor being Openreach’s decision to stop providing new PSTN and ISDN services at more than 118 UK telephone exchanges. This act is already trialling in Suffolk and Wiltshire and will be replicating across the UK.

Another is the transition campaign across the UK by September 2023 to stop the sale of PSTN and ISDN services. Meaning consumers both residential and businesses will not be able to buy or add new features to these two telephone services.
